Patty and I and our friend Glenn rode out of Florida beginning our first major tour. Our main goal was to enjoy ourselves; our major destination was to ride the Dragon’s Tail at Deals Gap. The rest of our plans were loose which gave us the ability to explore as we went along.
The Dragon’s Tail is 318 turns in 11 miles. Pay attention to your driving here. The metrics, (Crotch rockets), will fly past you as they defy death and the clock. Go slow. You never know what you might see around the next curve, the beauty of autumn colors, a truck crossing the center line, water trickling down the cliff face from some unseen spring. Excitement, anticipation, exhilaration … this is why we ride!!
The Smokey Mountains, Blue Ridge Parkway, New Found Gap and the Pisgah Inn were just some of our tour. The beauty and grandeur of nature and the openness of motorcycle touring made the whole trip a wonderful life memory.
At the end of our journey we had logged over 1500 miles. We met lots of nice folks, and saw some beautiful country. We gained a new respect for riding in the cold, and a greater appreciation of warm clothing. After we had unloaded the bikes and put them away, it was time to relax and reflect. A long soak in our hot tub provided the perfect end to our wonderful journey.
